Abolish property taxes. Raise sales taxes. There are old widow women who lost their homes over property taxes because their social security isn’t enough to pay it. That’s not right. I don’t like the opportunists who go to tax auctions either, they are not good moral folks. Commercial properties and residential properties that are worth more than a certain amount would be taxed.
Did you folks read the question? Sales taxes would be raised to compensate
Yes. Property taxes blurr the line between private property and government property.

Only if I want to live in a city with a bunch of uneducated morons running loose and no police force to call.
No, a decent portion of the tax base at the local level is property tax, more in some states than others. Eliminating one tax and raising another does little to save the old woman. The price of housing would likely increase after dropping the tax.

I would not, because those taxes are used for Trash Collection, Police and Fire Protection, not to mention schools.
If we are going to benefit from the services, then we should pay our fair share of property taxes.

No. A sales tax is a regressive tax meaning that a greater portion of poor people’s money goes to pay the tax than rich people’s money since the poor spend all of their meager salaries while the rich spend only part of what they earn.
Since the rich own property, they pay the property tax. although they pass the tax along to their tenants, they can’t pass it all because there is some elasticity in demand for rental housing.

In my area, senior citizens fall under a bracket which makes their taxes cheaper than home owners who are not seniors. I don’t feel that taxes should be totally eliminated seeing as though a property is an investment, and after so many years one should be able to use their gain to move into perhaps a senior home where they may be comfortable and yet not have to worry about taxes.

Abolish property taxes. Keep sales taxes where they are or lower them, and if you need revenue, get rid of all the wasteful spending. Like all the hacks in the government who have an inflated income, or do a meaningless job and only have it because they’re a friend of the governor or whatever.
I’m getting sick of paying higher taxes for corruption.

Retirees should get a break on property taxes or at least have them frozen. You have no argument with me abolish property taxes and public schools.

The problem with taxes is people need to pay them. I think a sales tax is more fair, because property taxes only really effect property owners.
Renters pay the tax, in the rent, but if you do not rent the house, you end up paying more.
I agree with you, increase the sales tax, and abolish the property tax, which hopefully will educate the masses to how much money is being spent.
Maybe if everyone had to pay higher sales tax, they would voice their opinions on whether or not they need a new ART COMPLEX, in their town, or some such ridiculous expenditure.
Only a small portion of people will benefit from the ART COMPLEX, so they should pay for it. In the old days, these were done with contributions. An individual or board would oversee the expenditures and keep it on budget.
Today, we build this stupid building, with no oversight, it goes millions over budget, and the taxpayers have to put up with an increase in property taxes.

No. The whole sales tax versus property tax thing is a fraud. Our state government offered us the choice of a 2% increase in sales tax instead of raising property tax. We went for it. 10 years later and our property taxes are right back up where they were and we are still paying the additional 2% in sales tax.

The sales tax in my area is already 10% so that wouldn’t work. Property tax is less for seniors in my state.

Yes, abolish property taxes for non income producing property and replace it with an import tariff.

Do you mean "Residential" as in "Owner occupied?" I think "residential" should include apartments because the costs of property tax is just passed on to the renter, as any expense would be. I know many people who own rental property and so I know that is the case. If the market won’t allow the entire extra cost to be passed on to the renter, the property owner will pass on what he can. If he can’t increase the rent at all, he will sell the appartments or rent homes and the renters will have to find another place to live. But the renter will have fewer options because fewer houses will be on the market, and many appartments will be turned into office space or demolished to make private homes.
We have seen this in the area where my boyfriend does business.
